The first arena-sized concert I ever saw was Black Sabbath on February 3, 1999. From a box seat directly across from the stage, I remember the band members looked like Micro Machines—tiny figures beneath a massive light show—but the sound hit like a freight train. With the support of Pantera and Deftones in Boston at the FleetCenter (now the TD Garden), it was a show to remember.
At the time, I didn’t fully appreciate how much of a legend Ozzy was and would remain to be. With a career spanning a staggering 22 studio albums, 13 under his own name and 9 as front-man for Black Sabbath, it’s an astonishing accomplishment. Over 100 million albums sold, Ozzy’s contribution to metal and rock music was monumental.
As a stagehand and sound engineer in the 2000’s, I worked several Boston-area OzzFest concerts, leading to some of the greatest memories of musical performances and moments in my live sound career. Nothing rivaled its lineups and prestige among metal and hard rock music concerts.
In tribute after his passing this week, we’ve assembled a visual and written discography of the Prince of Darkness.
Thank you Ozzy, for your music, your chaos, and being one of the most well-known examples of someone who was never afraid to challenge the conventions of society. Your contagious energy and music inspired generations, and your lyrics showed us how much we could fall in love with the darkness- in you, and in ourselves. – Brian B
